Lake Conroe

Historically, Lake Conroe is the deadliest lake in Texas. It is 21,000 acres and 75 feet deep. Even though it is named Lake Conroe, only a small portion of the lake is in Conroe. Most of it is in Montgomery County.

The lake was created in 1973 when the San Jacinto River Authority Built a dam on the San Jacinto River. The primary purpose of the lake is to provide a reliable water source for Houston. It holds 150 billion gallons of water.

Lake Conroe has a small Coast Guard base. The base has been operating with a volunteer staff since 1978.
